What a week. THis *would* all happen during finals . . .

My thinkpad A21p is back. After running for half an hour, it accessed
the (empty) dvd drive for no apparent reason, and froze. I rebooted,
and a few minutes later the same thing occurred.

I've removed the drive (I rarely use it), but what could cause this?
