I saw these errors once, and they turned out to be caused by a bad 80->50
pin adapter I was using to put an SCA-interface drive on a narrow bus.  I
swapped in a known-good adapter and the problem went away.  I assume you're
not using such an adapter, but my first suspicion if I were you would be a
bad cable.
