Well, I had already read & consulted that resource (it is
also mentioned in /usr/doc/README), but if that resource
had the answers I was seeking, I would not have written my
original message.

I also think that it would be a Good Idea for people
tracking -stable to also track the documentation.  :)
I might speculate that the reason "few people actually do
this" is that the procedure is not very well spelled-out
(compared to tracking -stable).
