Well, what you did above looks about right if you got the Makefile and
those three directories.  When you say "didn't work", what exactly
happened?  Some error message?  These things are important. :-)

If all else fails, you could try the package.  There should be a
link on the URL you mentioned above.  It may link to a package
for the wrong version of FreeBSD though, but if you dig around
<ftp://ftp.FreeBSD.org/pub/FreeBSD/>; you should be able to find a
package for your version.
