I think the executive summary, plus your state of near-completion on 
the "more right" approach makes the course fairly self-evident from the 
point of view of expedience.  

Looking at the code and trying to follow your commentary, I realise 
that I don't know enough about the details to be able to decide on 
technical merits, so I'll leave that to people with opinions. 8)
