For the record on this, twm does not have the problem with iconify/deiconify
getting the wrong background when windows overlap.

However, twm *does* have the problem that the menu brought up by clicking on
the root background draws initially as a transparent rectangle.  Otherwise,
it exhibits all the same problems I reported with vtwm.

Forcing the video RAM to half-size had no effect on the problem.

Thanks for all the help; I'll try windowmaker and see what happens next ...
