forcing NFS v2 or v3 results in the exact same behavoir.

Computer 'roysin' is Linux client. 'nfsserver' is a FreeBSD

Somehow it takes exactly 5 minutes from the mount command is issued, to
it succeeds. No traffic can be detected during that time.
