I found it on 9.2-STABLE, default 3 seconds, in src/sys/kern/mountroot.c

uname -a shows

FreeBSD amelia2 9.2-STABLE FreeBSD 9.2-STABLE #19 r256095M: Tue Oct 8 08:57:11 UTC 2013 root@amelia2:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/SANDY amd64

I used it on the USB 3.0 stick installation of FreeBSD 10-prerelease, and it mounted the root without further prompting.
