This is easily done as "export WITH_CUPS=1". I tried this, and am no nearer a solution. CUPS seems like a confusing morass to me; I would much prefer the ghostscript command that I can put into a filter and then call from /etc/printcap However, I since tried the command 'escputil -i -u -r /dev/ulpt0' My printer makes a few noises, and them times out, so I think I will try a parallel cable instead of the USB connection - unfortunately I think I have to go and buy one. >
