Ok, well, I have some spare memory lying around, I'll remove the current
memory in the machine and replace it. I'll presume that you think that
sysinstall is dumping core because of a hardware problem ?

Right, I tried sysinstall again yesterday and it worked!! I installed a
few packages and all was ok, a few minutes later I tried it again, and it
dumped core :( I then left the machine for about 5 minutes, and it still
dumped core but I was able to do a little more on sysinstall before it
crashed again. Funny thing, Linux never had any problems with the machine,
but many of times it did kick 'ide0: timeout' then followed by 'ide0:
reset' I used to get this error about 10 times a day.

Thanks for your help,

Quintin.
