Dave, I do not have one of those NICs, but I do own a Netfinity 7000 - a quad Pentium Pro - and had some similar problems getting devices to work as expected. A number of problems with this machine disappeared when I installed 4.4-Release. No release from the the 3.x branch - at least none that I tried - would work properly on the Netfinity. I see you're running 4.5-Release and am therefore a little surprised that you're having these problems. Judging from your dmesg, your problems are at least somewhat similar to mine. E.g., "MP table broken," "APIC entry missing," etc. I do not know why your quad-port NIC is not sharing IRQs. My suggestion is to check the settings in your BIOS. I tried various settings on my Netfinity and have found the ones that work, largely through trial and error. You said you've set the PnP OS to "None," which I also found to be necessary. If your 4000R also allows you to set options for various I/O operations, make sure you have the second I/O APIC enabled, in addition to routing I/O through the I/O APIC instead of "Default." I'm not sure I can suggest anything further, as I didn't have to do much else to resolve my problems beyond moving to the 4.x branch. After I gave up on the 3.x branch, the machine ran Win2k Server for a year or so. I did not have to disable any hardware on the machine; floppy and COM ports are enabled and - as far as I can tell - fully functional. One thing I noticed about my Netfinity 7000 is that a GENERIC kernel won't even boot with the second IO APIC enabled and/or IO routed through the APIC - I needed to disable these options, run through the install, then compile a custom SMP kernel before re-enabling them. You seem to be running a custom kernel already, so I don't think that's an issue, either. (Unless you happened to comment out something necessary for SMP operation.) Just for your reference, my kernel config and dmesg for 4.5-Release are below; it may give you ideas as to what you can try. Best of luck! Matt P.S. Make sure you have the latest BIOS for your server. If you still can't get it working, I'd suggest asking one of the technical lists. -- Copyright (c) 1992-2002 The FreeBSD Project.
