Yes, you're doing something wrong. Somebody already took the time to port this to FreeBSD and you're not taking advantage of it. If you have installed the FreeBSD Ports system, you can install it with: # cd /usr/ports/net/tac_plus4 # make install You need to be root to do this, as I've shown with the '#' prompt.
