Anyway what seemed to help me was a Web URL I ran across, and here is is for anyone who is interested: http://www.realtime.net/sculpture/nis-startup.html Looking at this most of what I had seemed right, but I was not adding the '-t /etc/master.passwd' flags to the yppasswddflags line on startup, so things were broken. Well in the end, I think I have it running, sorry for bothering the list, and hopefully the above link may be handy to someone.
