No prep is necessary when using raw devices such as ad4. The insert operation will overwrite everything (or the first $VOLUME_SIZE blocks) on ad4 with the contents of the mirror. Obviously if you want to use only a portion of a drive as a gmirror consumer then the drive should be fdisk'ed and/or bsdlabel'ed and the device name of the slice or partition (e.g. ad4a, ad4s1, or ad4s1a depending) should be used instead of ad4 as the gmirror consumer.
