There should be a startup file, /usr/local/etc/rc.d/pwcheck.sh. Also, you have to set up your password with /usr/local/sbin/saslpasswd. The documentation is all that great, I remember having found a website that helped. If you still can't get it working, let me know and I'll look for it again.
