ppp(8) has supported MPPE since the end of last October.

FWIW, I use vpns without encryption frequently.  What exactly is the 
problem with this ?  I don't want to encrypt traffic at that level as 
the encryption can never be as strong as doing it at a higher level.

I use vpns to share private address spaces between networks....
