The problem you demonstrate here is separate from the newline issue, and
based on that example I do agree that would be much too disruptive for us
to just drop in patch 2.5.  But we could have our patch understand that
one "\ missing newline" option in a patch.  Adding that support should
not break any patches which currently work.
