Make sure you've installed the mergemaster port, it's not part of the base
distribution.

This is the (slightly abbreviated) order of things:

1. Sync your source tree (eg, with cvsup).
2. Check /usr/src/UPDATING for any important info.
3. Build and install the world, either 'make world', or 'make buildworld'
followed by 'make installworld'.
4. Run 'mergemaster' to update /etc, /, and some other spots.  Do this with
*care*.
5. Rebuild and reinstall your kernel.
6. Reboot.

Surely someone will have a nit to pick regarding the above, but it's purdy
close.  I'll assume you have read or will read:

PS - I don't think I've ever had cvsup running for more than roughly an
hour and a half, even for a major update on my 24,000 connection.
