I don't know what caused your panic. I also installed through the iso 
(because of cvs). You can try installing only the minium you need for a 
internet connection and then install the rest trough ftp. If you lucky 
this does goes well. You may even update you source first with cvs and 
then rebuild you system.

One thing did go wrong with me: One file needed for pptpclient was not 
pressend (/usr/libsomthing)
