actually these steps have been repeated on -stable mailing lists
(after the release of 4.0 version).  they are also present in
/usr/src/UPDATING under the date section 20000315 near the bottom
(just before the 20000308 entry).  i just repeated them here.



also... please don't send private mail to me related to a reply of
mine on a mailing list.  if you must, at least copy the appropriate
list too.
