Grab the works and burn it to a CD.

  % ftp ftp://ftp<whatever>.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.0-RELEASE.tar

Untar the dist, build the ISO9660 filesystem, and write the CD. Now
you have FreeBSD 4.0R forever.

Note that this will _not_ grab X or packages. You need to add some
extra steps for that, but it can be done.

(I'm assuming the ftp site you choose has a server that lets you
tar-down a whole directory tree.)
