There are issues with committing them.  The biggest one is that
there's not a flag to say "use the old way still" for people that need
the only way.  Plus it breaks people's configs.  I'm still cooking on
what to do about it.

You are correct.  I've merged a lot of that functionality into
-stable, but not all of it.
