How did you compile your 4.0 kernel?
If you were following the instructions from UPDATING, could you please
try to build and install the GENERIC kernel as follows:

cd /usr/src (or whatever your 4.0 sources are)
make buildkernel installkernel

This will build and install new /kernel.GENERIC (not the /kernel).
Try to boot with it...
