There is no one answer to such a question. You need to make your own sense. Here is what makes sense to me (for me). If it ain't broke, why fix it? Introducing even a minor change can be quite destabilizing to your computing environment. In general, I "make world" about once per minor release on -stable boxes. I may update portions of the operating systems on occassion IF I have a particular need. However, I have no problem leaving a well running box alone indefinitely. I should note that even on my "toy" (ie: -current) box, I only "make world" when a new "toy" I desire requires it (maybe once per month). If nothing else, this reduces the opportunity for me to hose my data. Always remember: you are biggest risk to your data.
