There are some excellent mouse configuration details at
http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/4.3.0/mouse.html
by Kazutaka Yokota.  I used it extensively when I upgraded
to XF86 4.3.x.  Maybe you can integrate some of that material
or provide a meta outline with pointers, etc.
