I have not been successful with a 4.1 install with less than 40 MB. Do you have the August 2000 version of the 4.1 disks? If you don't I would recommend getting them from BSDi. If you get the 4.1 powerpak you get Greg Lehey's book with it. Have you tried the install without a custom kernel? You can compile a custom one later.
