In an earlier post you mentioned that there were problems with /dev/nvidiactl 
and the kernel module.  Just to confirm, 

* Does /dev/nvidiactl exist at all?
* Do you have /dev/nvidia0?
* Does "kldstat" show nvidia.ko at all?  
* What error do you get when you manually load the nvidia kernel 
module "kldload nvidia"?
