Well, you might try installing magicfilter and using the
ljet4l-filter. The ljet4m-filter works fine on both the 5m and 5mp.

On the other hand, you might also tell us what happens if you try
printing flat ascii via the device, instead of using lpr. Likewise,
trying to render some postscript through ghostscript and sending the
output to the device might be interesting.
