Firstly, thanks for your reponse....

Yep, CDPLAYER is set in /etc/profile for all.

wcd0: tray open

one hundred and fifty one times.
It wasn't, but there was no cd in it.

Yes, and yes.  /dev/wcd0c is there too.
Dunno what that is for.

$ ls -la /dev/wcd*
brwxrwxrwx  1 root  operator   19,   0 Jan 10 13:30
/dev/wcd0a
brw-r-----  1 root  operator   19,   2 Jan 10 13:30
/dev/wcd0c

I changed the perms......

Now xcd just does nothing, and cdplayer gives
"bad file descriptor" after running xcd, until
I've mucked about a bit.
