I have had to use GNOME3 on my notebook for a month as KMS was not
properly working yet and I have had to make a public presentation. It
was so embarrassing as another person has had to help me out when there
have been problems with the video system in use. Irony was - as you
have said - nobody has had any idea what could be wrong until a GNOME3
user came forward with a solution that was a bit off for all others but
it worked.

Since I am back on FreeBSD for this machine, I did not have any of
these problems anymore.

I am also used to blackbox. So, no luxuries like GNOME2.

Erich
