I had the same problem.  It turned out to be the XKeysymDB file.  Apparently,
the java interpreter couldn;t find this file.  Set the XKEYSYMDB
environment variable to poin to this file 
(usually /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB).  This should fix the problem.
