newfs blows away your data.  There's no reason to do that.

Well, having read this, I'm still not sure what problems you're
having.  What happens when you try to start Vinum?  You should
also take a look at http://www.vinumvm.org/vinum/how-to-debug.html and
supply me with any relevant information you have there.
