It would be highly desirable to allow for pccard/cardbus cards to
become active here.

It would be desirable if there's nothing to mount root on, that
additional choices can become available.  For example, if you are
being prompted for the root device a card can be plugged in while you
are waiting...  It would be nice if the new system allows for this.
