wud it be better to comment out all the ttyv8 lines and start XFree86 as a =

i really cant make xdm to work...

Yes - it's often easier to go with a .xinitrc file 
and type "startx" at the login prompt.

There's a good article by Dru Lavigne on how to set 
this up:
