Just use the port - /usr/ports/x11/afterstep144.

Yes I realize that it says afterstep144 - I've asked for a repository name
change and it hasn't been done yet.  I'll ask Satoshi again.  The
afterstep144 port actually builds AS-1.4.5.3.  At present 1.5 is in
development and pre-release 2 should be out real soon now (Guylhelm said
Wed...).  :-)
