One could argue that a machine isn't in production until it has a new
kernel compiled - you probably don't want to use GENERIC in a production
environment. That is, include recompiling the kernel as part of the
installation.

In either case, installing a new kernel on an existing operating system is
very problem-free. This may not be the case for NT - I have no idea.
