Nope afraid not what is arriving is not known to me and
is certainly not from a PPP server.

So the modems sync'ed up ok and you got a carrier.
That is good.

Their side is probably a PPP server and you're seeing the initial PPP
packets.  This is normal.

I use a US Robotics Sportster Si 14.4 Faxmodem on my FreeBSD box
so I can dial-in (login or ppp) from home.  I don't think I use any
special codes:
