I figured something like this would do the job: Problem solved -- I'm an idiot :-) Dump apparently sends the table of contents before any of the actual data, so my 'restore -t' was giving up at the end of the ToC, hence the broken pipe. Just tried again on a small directory, actually restoring the files onto the FreeBSD disk this time. Worked like a charm. Thanks all for the suggestions.
