You can use nohup, with ftp or wget (/usr/ports/net/wget). Instead of
ftp, use nohup ftp, proceed as usual, use prompt and mget to
get several files without confirmation, make sure the
downloading has started, then disconnect: the ftp should
continue. With wget, or with ftp <url> for a single file, you
can just put an & at the end of the command, the thing will be put
in the background and you can disconnect whenever you like without
disturbing it.

* Yes, this may be a working solution. You should really check out
screen (/usr/ports/misc/screen). Yes, the others will work if you have
a task you want completed and don't care about the state you leave it
in. Let's say that you're editing a script or reading a log file and
get disconnected. Screen will allow you to return to that same view
you were at when you left (providing no errors show to that screen).
As a customer of an undependable dialup ISP back around '95, I found
that to be a very handy tool for working in remote machines. Check
into it. It's definitely worth your time.
