Read on.. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Office XP & Windows XP activation woes Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 11:01:56 -0400 From: "William Warner" To: If you're even considering upgrading to Office XP or Windows XP, be sure to read my comments & the articles below.. You'll be glad you did. You'd think it's bad enough now spending hours re-installing Microsoft Windows or Office when it doesn't work. Well just wait until you get your hands on XP! As you might have heard these two products include a new forced activation within either 50 runs for Office or 14 days for Windows. When run, it essentially creates a fingerprint of your machine & sends it to Microsoft.. If you change hardware (say maybe a new hard drive & more memory or a video card) and ZAP! You Windows or Office no longer works! And, to make matters worse you can't simply re-install them, as that won't fix it. You are forced to call Microsoft & persuade them that you own the CD you're holding in your hand before they'll give you the code to unlock your software! And guess what happens if they don't believe you? You guessed it! You're SOL with either a machine that won't boot Windows XP or Office XP that won't let you save documents and you have to go buy it AGAIN! Microsoft says this activation procedure is to protect them from piracy but that's a bunch of crap. Any software pirate will have a 'crack' to bypass this activation so it doesn't even run. All this does is put a larger burden on us, the real customers. They say it's easy & foolproof. Well they're the fools. Read the below articles & you'll see the problems people are already having with Office XP. Microsoft has already caved on the 'Smart Tags' controversy. (See link below) Personally I won't buy a product that self destructs because it *thinks* I am a thief! I'll stick with the versions I have now & not feed that cash cow of theirs any further. If enough people complain & no one buys these products then they'll be forced to change it. Feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested.
