     ... because there is no good key that can be used.  I like having
the Esc key be close to the "1" key in the top row, and there is no
(little-used) key there that I can use.

[ There are, of course, other keys near the "1" key, but using any of
  those as an Esc key would be analogous to remapping the space bar to
  [Enter].  ;-)  It's not something that I'd want to do.  ]
