My timeline is similar to yours, 'cept that it starts about 6 months
earlier.

Pitfalls?  Mainly -- the parameters to some commands are different.  

Differences? 
-- man hier  is your friend.  FreeBSD seems to be more logically organized
to me.  Your opinion may be different.  :-)
             
-- I prefer the ports tree over RPMs in RH Linux.
