There's only one possiblity, really.  This part of the source, the gnu 
tools, is purposely kept incredibly stable (folks are always asking up to 
upgrade to later versions, but since too much depends on this being 
stable, no upgrade gets done).  You have to have corrupted sources.  Your 
only decision is how much of your sources to blow away and reload.
