If this applies to you, keep in mind that you can download updated packages and install them very much like RedHat Linux's RPM's. For the i386, you'd get them from ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/i386/packages-3-stable/ or a mirror near you. :-) Package filenames always end in .tgz and are installed with the pkd_add(1) command.
