I have the same situation here, I am running Linux with DES, and when BSD
installed it was using MD5.

What I did was just go into /stand/sysinstall and install the DES stuff.

When I manually add the password to the passwd file, it will read it fine, 
when I change the password, it is then MD5.  I didn't have to symlink
any of the libs.  Maybe I did it wrong ;)  But it works.
