Well... I solved the problem.

I ended up rebuilding the p5 Mysql modules, linking libmysqlclient.a
statically.  Solves the problem of having to search :-)

Still doesn't explain why it suddenly broke with shared objects in the
first place, but at least I'm back up and running.
