I am not seeing that behavior. I was also lucky because I don't appear 
to have any installed ports with a portsdb -U caused problem. The 
first port that I saw with a dependancy problem was Net-SSH-Perl. I 
don't see a gnome dependancy in its ?-deps lists. When you look at the 
INDEX entry for Net-SSH-Perl, you have a very long line. It wouldn't 
surprise me if the problem is nothing more than the dimension of an 
array is exceeded when portsdb is generating the entry. The gnome 
related ?-deps lists also have a very long line.
