I did a 

	cvs update -rRELENG_2_2 -D'Oct 6' ppp

and the new (or must I say 'old' :-) binary worked OK (7.5KB/sec on ISDN).
The only significant changes between Oct 6 and now are indeed the
sl_compress* changes.
