Well, I don't know about XP, but previous versions of windows have written 
over the boot sector of the hard drive and killed the FreeBSD boot.

This is really poor and inexcuseable on their part, but the fix is just to
use something like os-bs (Operating System Boot Select) to reinstall
the menuing choice in the boot record. You'll find it and similar
utilities in the "tools" section of your CD or on the freebsd FTP site.
