I put configuration files in /usr/local/etc/X11/xinit/ and then startx /usr/local/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.icewm For other window managers, I usr xinitrc.jwm, xinitrc.twm, etc in place of xinitrc.icewm . I remember Xfce includes startxfce4. Building and installing Xorg from FreeBSD ports does not include xdm; however building Xorg from NetBSD pkgsrc (which I have done only on NetBSD) includes xdm with the meta-package. Tom
